August Walking 👟

Leadership support rooted in equity and justice

This Month's Walking...I have a confession: I'm a snob.
I'm a ☕ snob. (That's TEA folks, not coffee - eewww) 😉
This is a live look at one of my TWO tea shelves. (The top one is for Black teas, the one below is for tisanes - the correct term for "herbal tea," - green teas, etc.). [See, I'm obnoxious!]
Tea time is a core part of my self-care routine. I make myself one pot in the 🌅 and another in the 🕒. Family and friends know that my morning tea time is sacrosanct. DO NOT DISTURB. 🚫
The history and rituals surrounding tea go back thousands of years. Unsurprisingly, colonialism, imperialism, and extractive capitalism show up throughout the backstory of tea. So when I read histories about tea I actually scratch two itches in one!
Are there self-care routines you protect the way I protect my tea time? I'd love to hear about them...Keep Walking!AbbyP.S. If you're wondering what self-care has to do with equity and belonging, naming and claiming that we do not need to "earn" rest and well-being simply because we are human; that we do not need to "earn" self-care (and neither does anyone else) is a huge equity mindset shift.P.P.S. Quick shout-out to two of my favorite tea shops Arbor Teas in MI and Saratoga Tea & Honey Company in NY.

I am honored to announce that I will be speaking at Together Towards Tomorrow 2023, a fully virtual, national nonprofit leadership conference hosted by New Chapter Coaching, focused on organizational leadership, culture, and growth.Join me on November 16 as I will be facilitating an afternoon workshop called "Why and How to Collaborate Meaningfully with Directly-Impacted People."Early bird discounts for individuals and teams end August 31, so head here to register now!I'm looking forward to meeting new folks and learning from my fellow presenters. Hope to see some of you there!

An example of information gathered and reported by DataHaven
My Connecticut Folks! Are you familiar with DataHaven's Town Equity Reports? They are a fantastic tool for anyone interested in knowing and understanding our local, regional, and state-wide well-being.According to their website, the DataHaven Town Equity Reports disaggregate data from the 2020 Census, America Community Survey microdata files,
DataHaven Community Wellbeing Survey record-level files, and federal and state agencies to create relevant town-level information that is not available from any other source. These innovative and user-friendly reports are informing many local- and state-level efforts to improve community well-being and racial equity.”Connecticut's racial inequities were built into systems and laws generations ago, as is true in most places. We are lucky to have this kind of tool to see where we are, brainstorm how to close inequity gaps, and measure our progress. If you aren't a CT follower, maybe DataHaven's work could inspire your local leaders to create a similar data collection and reporting tool!
